In our very first episode, Fifi Fittonia suddenly becomes dramatically droopy, sending Sprout searching for Miss Tania’s help.
But before reaching for the watering can, Miss Tania teaches an important plant-care lesson:
Always check your plant first.
After checking Fifi’s soil, they discover that she is simply thirsty. With the right amount of water, a little patience, and plenty of care, Fifi begins to perk right back up.
And, of course, she is soon feeling completely fabulous again.
What Fifi Teaches Us About Watering Plants
It can be tempting to water a plant the moment it begins to droop, but drooping does not always mean a plant needs water.
Before watering, take a closer look.
Check the Soil
Gently feel the top inch or two of soil with your finger.
If the soil feels dry, your plant may be ready for a drink. If the soil still feels moist, it may be best to wait.
Look at Your Plant
Plants often give us little clues about what they need.
Look for changes such as:
Drooping or curling leaves
Dry or crispy edges
Yellowing leaves
Soft or overly wet soil
Changes in the plant’s usual appearance
Learning your plant’s normal look makes it easier to notice when something has changed.
Give the Right Amount of Water
Plants do not all need the same amount of water.
Some plants enjoy consistently moist soil, while others prefer their soil to dry considerably between waterings.
Instead of watering every plant on the same schedule, learn what your individual plant prefers.
When watering, make sure the soil receives enough moisture to properly hydrate the roots without leaving the plant sitting in excess water.
Don’t Love Your Plant Too Much
Too much water can be just as harmful as too little.
Constantly wet soil can make it difficult for roots to receive the oxygen they need and may eventually lead to root problems.

A Little Fittonia Tip
Fittonias are sometimes known for being a little dramatic.
When their soil becomes too dry, their leaves can quickly droop and make the plant look much worse than it actually is.
After receiving the proper amount of water, a healthy Fittonia may begin perking back up surprisingly quickly.
Fifi might call it a plant emergency.
We call it a reminder to check the soil.
